Professional care for a safe, pain-free experience

When wisdom teeth don’t grow in properly, they can cause pain, swelling, and even damage nearby teeth. That’s why at Showground Dental, our experienced team offers gentle, safe, and effective extractions to help you stay comfortable and protect your long-term oral health.

Whether your wisdom teeth are impacted, partially erupted, or causing discomfort, we offer expert assessment and tailored solutions to ensure your comfort throughout the process.

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people have no issues, many experience complications due to lack of space in the jaw, leading to impaction, infection, or discomfort.

Why might wisdom teeth need removal?

Wisdom teeth may require extraction if they:

✔ Are impacted (stuck beneath the gum or growing at an angle)

✔ Cause pain, swelling, or infection (pericoronitis)

✔ Develop cavities due to difficulty cleaning

✔ Push against neighbouring teeth, causing misalignment

✔ Irritate the cheek or tongue due to poor positioning

✔ Interfere with orthodontic treatment (braces or aligners)

Leaving problematic wisdom teeth untreated can lead to infection, damage to adjacent teeth, and cyst formation in the jawbone.

Teeth pain

If you experience any of the following, a wisdom teeth evaluation is recommended:

✔ Frequent headaches or jaw pain

Wisdom teeth removal process At Showground Dental, we provide comprehensive care from consultation to extraction and aftercare.

1. Consultation & assessment

We begin with a thorough examination, including digital X-rays to assess the position and condition of your wisdom teeth. Our dentist will discuss the best treatment plan based on your individual needs.

2. Sedation options for comfort

We understand that wisdom teeth extractions can cause anxiety for some patients. To ensure a comfortable and stress-free experience, we offer:

  • Happy gas (nitrous oxide): A mild sedative that helps you relax during the procedure.
  • The green whistle (penthrox): A stronger inhaled sedative for a deeper sense of relaxation.
  • Local Anaesthesia: Numbs the area completely so you feel no pain.

For complex cases, we may refer you to a specialist for IV sedation or general anaesthesia.

3. Extraction

Depending on whether your wisdom teeth are fully erupted or impacted, the procedure will vary:

  • Simple extraction: For fully erupted wisdom teeth, the tooth is gently loosened and removed.
  • Surgical extraction: For impacted teeth, a small incision is made in the gum, and the tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal.

Our skilled team ensures a gentle, precise approach to minimise discomfort and promote faster healing.

Aftercare & recovery
4. Aftercare & recovery

Following your extraction, we provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. Key guidelines include:

✔ Bite on gauze to control bleeding and replace as needed

✔ Apply ice packs to reduce swelling (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off)

✔ Eat soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies

✔ Avoid using straws to prevent dry socket

✔ Take prescribed pain relief as directed

✔ Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first 24-48 hours

Most patients recover within a few days to a week, with swelling and discomfort subsiding gradually.
